What is Wrongful Termination And Retaliation?

Washington State is what is called an "at-will" state, meaning an employer can fire their employee for any reason, but an employer may not terminate an employee for unlawful reasons.

An employer may not terminate an employee who speaks up about something illegal or because the employee refused to do an illegal act. This is sometimes called "whistleblower" retaliation.

An employer may not terminate an employee for discriminatory reasons related to a person's protected race, sex, gender, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, immigration status, or any other protected class under the law.

An employer may not terminate an employee because they took protected leave, used paid sick leave, or engaged in any other protected activity. An employer is also prohibited from terminating an employee who reports what they reasonably believe is discrimination.

Our attorneys believe in standing up for employees who have been wrongfully terminated. We fight to protect workplace rights because those rights lose power when we don't enforce them. If you believe you have been wrongfully terminated, contact us for a free consultation.
